Location
Meucon is a commune in the Morbihan region of Brittany, 8 km north of Vannes. Having become an independent parish only in 1779, the commune was created in 1790. Until then, it had been a dependency of the bishops of Vannes. The site on which the village would later develop was first renowned for a sick-bay established in the 12th century: the lepers who were housed there and lived in the adjacent dwellings specialized in rope production. Inheriting this centuries-old tradition, the commune's last rope factory closed its doors in 1914. Meucon was also renowned for its fouaces, a pastry made from water, salt and wheat flour. The last dedicated unit lasted until the early 1970s. If fouaces de Meucon were appreciated, it was because of the quality of the local spring water. A natural resource that has endured: the water drawn from Meucon still supplies the town of Vannes.
With a surface area of 5.7 km², the verdant area is ideal for hiking. With its heritage and sporting activities, and a population of 2,300, Meucon is a pleasant stopover in the immediate vicinity of Vannes and the wonders of the Golfe du Morbihan.
